I love this so much! From the onion syrup to the fresh sunflower seeds eaten from the flower itself. I remember experiencing these things growing up in Poland. And, these books by Sophie are true gems! I love them and reach for them often. Thank you!

This was great! So many memories from my youth came flooding back. My maternal grandmother raised me and from her I got some Polish sense of humor. I spoke Polish as well as English until she passed when I was 12. ... This interview made me realize and be thankful for so much heritage that I observed but never asked about so it's wonderful that you are bringing it back for us. I have lots of comfrey in my yard and a white lilac adjoining my front yard that I will enjoy much more come spring. Val, I loved what you said- plants have the power that we give to them. I believe this too! I could go on and on but I will end by saying I appreciate the treasure trove that you bring to us. Sophie was terrific ⭐️

Ah yes! That Polish sense of humor is one of my favorite things about the culture. It's always so fun when family gets together. Even if the language fades, that sense of humor remains! That's so wonderful that you have comfrey and white lilac too. Such special plants. So glad you enjoyed the podcast :) Sophie is such an amazing human, so grateful for everything she shared.

This episode was amazing! I loved hearing Sophie's background and upbringing, and how her parents met in Germany after WWII and then came to the U.S. It sounds so much like my grandparents' story, how they also met in Germany after the war as refugees and former POWs, and then eventually came to the U.S. My grandfather also had a habit of picking "weeds" off the side of the road and using them to soothe his stomach and other ailments. To hear such similar stories really helps me feel connected to my ancestors and the culture!
